Gianni Infantino, President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), hinted at the possibility of permanently organizing World Cup tournaments at the end of the year, instead of the traditional mid-year schedule, during his speech at the European Football Clubs’ Association (EFC) General Assembly.
According to Spain’s AS newspaper, Infantino said FIFA is conducting extensive discussions about adjusting the dates of major tournaments, adding: “We are already delving into the details and constantly discussing this matter. It is not limited to the World Cup only; it is a comprehensive rethink of football’s future. Even in some European countries, playing in July is very difficult due to high temperatures.”
From Qatar to Saudi Arabia… The Experience Repeats
The FIFA president explained that the 2022 Qatar World Cup, held in November and December due to the high summer temperatures, could serve as a model for future World Cup seasons, especially with the upcoming 2034 World Cup in Saudi Arabia.
He pointed out that June, although ideal for European football, is underutilized, adding: “Perhaps it is time to reconsider and improve the global football calendar to serve all parties.”
Potential New Dates: March and October
Infantino confirmed that FIFA is studying the possibility of making March and October the most suitable times for international tournaments, emphasizing the importance of balancing national team competitions with club commitments.
He said: “If we want tournaments to be held simultaneously worldwide, March and October might be the best options. Playing in December is impossible in some regions, as is July in others. We must consider all these factors to achieve the best for global football.”
Anticipated Revolution in Football
Infantino’s statement comes amid a series of controversial reform moves within FIFA; some believe changing the World Cup dates could open the door to a comprehensive organizational revolution in the football calendar, while others fear the impact on domestic leagues and continental tournaments.
