Brazilian striker Roberto Firmino, Al Sadd player and Qatari league champion, said on Saturday that he will do his utmost with the team to achieve the dream of winning the AFC Champions League. Firmino, 33, joined Al Sadd in July 2023 from Saudi Al Ahli with a contract until 2027. He was a key player in Liverpool’s attack before moving to Al Ahli, with whom he won the AFC Champions League last season. Firmino said, “My presence here is not to achieve individual numbers or personal glory, but to contribute to achievements. I am here to help the team and look forward to leaving my mark in Al Sadd’s history.” Al Sadd hopes, led by the experienced Brazilian star, to win the continental title for the third time in its history, ending a wait of more than a decade since their last title in 2011.
Coach Felix Sanchez’s team was eliminated last year in the AFC Champions League quarterfinals by Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale. Firmino added, “I will not make individual promises, but as a group, we promise to fight and work together to achieve all possible titles, including the dream of winning the Champions League.” He continued, “I am motivated for my journey with Al Sadd and promise to do my best with my teammates to meet the great fans’ aspirations.” Al Sadd will start defending its title in the new Qatari league season by hosting Qatar SC on August 16.
