Heavy monsoon rains hit northern India on Tuesday, resulting in at least 10 deaths in the past 24 hours and prompting authorities to close schools and offices in several areas in anticipation of worsening conditions.

The Yamuna River in New Delhi exceeded the official danger level, raising fears of flooding in low-lying areas. Gurugram experienced flooding of roads and homes due to the heavy rains, causing traffic paralysis.

In Punjab state, which has a population of over 30 million, 29 deaths have been recorded this month from rain-related incidents, along with extensive damage to crops and livestock.

Thousands of residents have been evacuated from affected areas with the help of the army and disaster management teams. Meteorological department forecasts indicate heavy rains will continue until Wednesday.
