Iceland took the lead in the 39th minute through Viktor Pálsson, before Christopher Nkunku equalized for France in the 63rd minute.

In the 68th minute, Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the second goal for France, but Iceland equalized again in the 70th minute through Kristján Helgason.

The French team, 2018 World Cup champions and 2022 runners-up, raised their tally to ten points at the top of Group 4, three points ahead of Ukraine, who are second and will face France in the next round in November.

Meanwhile, Iceland moved up to four points in third place, while Azerbaijan is in fourth place with one point.

The group winner will qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup finals in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
