Brazilian Vinicius Junior, Real Madrid star, continued to stir controversy during his team’s match against Real Oviedo, which he started on the bench. Despite this, he scored one goal and assisted another in the match held at Carlos Tartiere Stadium in the second round of La Liga, ending with a 3-0 win for Real Madrid. The 24-year-old Brazilian got into altercations with Real Oviedo fans who responded with insults and abuse, according to multiple Spanish reports. Vinicius attempted to deceive referee Ricardo de Burgos by falling inside the box to win a penalty but received a yellow card, prompting Oviedo fans to call him “stupid,” as reported by the Spanish newspaper AS. The paper noted that Vinicius remains quick to anger, needing only a small spark to flare up.
He then assisted Kylian Mbappé’s second goal and instead of celebrating, chose to provoke the crowd, who threw a bottle near him. Mbappé tried to calm Vinicius by covering his mouth and urging him to control his temper, but Vinicius continued arguing with the fans. When he scored the third goal in stoppage time, he celebrated with a provocative gesture mocking the fans by signaling “second division,” referring to their team’s status, which intensified the boos against him. Vinicius then argued with the referee who asked him to move away from the Oviedo fans, and he went straight to the locker room without celebrating with teammates. After the match, Vinicius continued his defiance by posting on social media “This is me.” AS considers Vinicius’ “unstable” personality a real test for Spanish coach Xabi Alonso this season.
Real Madrid will host Real Mallorca next Saturday at Santiago Bernabéu in the third round of La Liga before the international break, which Vinicius may use to rest and regain focus after being excluded from the Brazilian national team squad.
