The Taliban are investigating explicit death threats against dozens of Afghan women working for the United Nations. According to the latest UN update on human rights in Afghanistan, dozens of female staff received explicit death threats in May 2023 from unidentified individuals related to their work with the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and other agencies. The Taliban informed the UN mission that their members are not responsible for the threats, while the Afghan Ministry of Interior is conducting an investigation. The Taliban had previously banned Afghan women from working in local and international NGOs in December 2022 and extended this ban to the UN six months later, threatening to close agencies that continue to employ women.
