The Chilean media, published today Monday, unanimously agreed that the historic victory achieved by the Moroccan under-20 football team over their Spanish counterparts (2-0), in the opening match of Group C at the U20 World Cup finals, represented a “major surprise” in this global tournament hosted by Chile until October 19.
The same media noted that Morocco’s achievement was not just a valuable win but reflected the strong impression the “U20 Lions” left on the fans who witnessed the match.
In this context, the football-specialized site “Primera B Chile” wrote that “Morocco exploded the first major surprise in the U20 World Cup by defeating Spain at the start of Group C matches,” adding that “football once again confirms that the truth remains on the pitch, and Morocco earned the three points by surpassing Spain.”
Meanwhile, the site “Prensa Futbol” stated that Morocco took advantage of the opportunities presented and shone notably in their first match against Spain, adding that the Moroccan team played “with determination and imposed itself against the Spanish opponent,” noting that the national players knew how to capitalize on the chances against a Spanish team “that struggled a lot in a difficult second half.”
The same site mentioned that with this victory, Morocco leads Group C with three points, while Spain finished the first round with no points, and Mexico and Brazil share second place with one point each after their 2-2 draw.
In an article titled “Moroccan Stars Who Won Chile’s Hearts,” the Chilean edition of the newspaper “AS” wrote that “the fans who came to watch the match were amazed by the performances of Othman Maâma and Yassine Jassem,” explaining that these two players “made the Spanish team lose their composure,” confirming that “their level was so good that the fans, and even the Spaniards themselves, applauded them after they were substituted.”
The newspaper reinforced its article with a statement from national coach Mohamed Wahbi, who confirmed that “Morocco has a clear vision and aims to win the World Cup in the future,” adding: “It is true that we have a lot to do, but we must remain humble while keeping the flame of hope alive (…) Winning against Spain was very difficult, and my job now is to maintain humility.”
All eyes will turn next Thursday to the “Nacional Julio Martínez” stadium in the capital Santiago, where the Moroccan national team will face Brazil, aiming for a positive result to boost their chances of qualifying for the second round.
