MP Sami Sous, member of the House of Representatives from the Future of the Nation Party, praised the important speech delivered by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi today during the opening session of the “8th Cairo Water Week,” which presented a comprehensive vision for water resource management and decisive messages regarding Egypt’s rights to Nile waters, emphasizing that water security is an existential issue that is non-negotiable. He explained that the President set a clear roadmap through his speech to address water issues globally and regionally, enhancing cooperation and confronting increasing challenges.

In a statement today, Sous said that President El-Sisi clearly addressed global challenges related to water scarcity and the impacts of climate change, stressing the importance of international efforts to find innovative and sustainable solutions that guarantee the human right to clean water, as one of the fundamental human rights and a pillar for achieving sustainable development. This reflects Egypt’s balanced vision of combining development with the preservation of natural resources.

The MP added that the President reviewed the major national projects Egypt is implementing for integrated water management, including establishing treatment plants and reusing agricultural drainage water such as Bahr El-Baqar and the New Delta, alongside rehabilitating irrigation networks, expanding modern irrigation systems, and protecting Egyptian coasts from climate change effects. These efforts embody the state’s keenness to achieve sustainable water and food security, support agricultural expansion plans, and improve citizens’ quality of life.

Sous praised the sincere Egyptian efforts announced by the President in supporting African brothers and helping them face water challenges through major developmental projects such as drilling solar-powered groundwater wells, establishing rainwater harvesting facilities, developing early warning and forecasting centers, and training programs to build the capacities of African cadres at the “African Water and Climate Adaptation Training Center.” He affirmed that these initiatives reflect Egypt’s belief in African destiny unity and that water justice can only be achieved through cooperation and integration among the continent’s countries.

The MP concluded his statement pointing out that the President’s speech included a clear stance on Ethiopia’s behavior in managing the dam, stressing that Egypt rejects any unilateral actions on the Nile River that affect its water rights or threaten regional stability. He confirmed that fair cooperation and respect for international law are the ways to ensure water security and joint development, adding that the President clarified that Ethiopia’s uncontrolled management of the dam caused damage to the downstream countries, confirming Egypt’s position calling for a binding legal agreement to regulate the dam’s operation and protect the interests of all parties.
