Japanese scientist Susumu Kitagawa, British scientists Richard Robson and Omar M. Yaghi have won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

The three received the award for their work in developing metal-organic frameworks.

Hans Ellegren, Secretary General of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, announced the Chemistry Prize in Stockholm today, Wednesday, marking the third Nobel Prize announced this week.

Robson is affiliated with the University of Melbourne in Australia, Kitagawa with Kyoto University in Japan, and Yaghi with the University of California, Berkeley.

The three were awarded for discovering powerful techniques to decode proteins and even design new proteins, which are the fundamental building blocks of life.

Their work used advanced techniques, including artificial intelligence, and has the potential to transform how new medicines and other materials are manufactured.
