Italian Serie A club Sassuolo officially announced the signing of veteran Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matić until the end of the current season, with an automatic extension option for an additional season based on specific contractual terms. Matić, 37, mutually terminated his contract with French club Olympique Lyonnais about two weeks ago, despite having a contract until summer 2026. Sassuolo stated that Matić is one of the most prominent players to have worn the club’s jersey in terms of titles and achievements, highlighting his long career filled with domestic and international trophies. Matić’s career began in Serbia before moving to Europe, playing for clubs including Chelsea, Benfica, and Manchester United, winning major titles such as three English Premier League titles, the FA Cup, and the Portuguese league. He previously played in Serie A with Roma in the 2022-2023 season before moving to the French league with Rennes and Lyon.
Internationally, Matić has played 48 matches for Serbia and won the Serbian Footballer of the Year award twice. He has also played over 250 Premier League matches and 107 European competition games. Sassuolo concluded their statement by welcoming Matić, saying: “From the family of the Blacks and Greens, we welcome Nemanja Matić to our ranks.”
