Coach Rúben Amorim has been given three years to prove himself at Manchester United, after the club’s co-owner, Jim Ratcliffe, insisted on not making a hasty decision regarding the Portuguese coach facing increasing pressure.

Amorim has faced ongoing speculation about his potential dismissal throughout this season amid United’s shaky performance and continuous crises.

The former Sporting Lisbon Portuguese coach, appointed by Ratcliffe in November 2024, previously admitted he considered leaving during the club’s worst period.

United finished last season in 15th place in the English Premier League, their lowest since the 1973-1974 season, also missing out on Champions League qualification after losing the Europa League final to their struggling rival Tottenham at the time. United’s performance this season has not been much better, currently sitting 10th after losing three of their first seven league matches, and they were also eliminated from the League Cup after a loss to fourth-tier Grimsby.

Ratcliffe said on “The Business” podcast, produced by The Times and The Sunday Times: “He hasn’t had a good season. Rúben needs to prove he’s a great coach within three years. That’s the position I take.”

He added, “Sometimes I don’t understand the press. They want instant success, thinking it’s like flipping a light switch, you press it and suddenly everything is perfect.”

He continued, “You can’t run a club the size of Manchester United with quick, rash reactions based on the opinions of some journalists from time to time.”

The “Red Devils” have not won the league title since 2013, with their last continental trophy being the Europa League in 2017.

When asked what would happen if the Glazer family, who still hold the majority stake, asked him to sack Amorim, Ratcliffe replied, “That won’t happen.”
