The return of French midfielder Adrien Rabiot to Italian football seems confirmed with his signing for AC Milan to play again under his former Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri, according to several media reports and statements by the French national team coach before the summer transfer window closed on Monday night.

Rabiot’s journey with Marseille ended after the club placed him on the transfer list following a fight with his young English teammate Jonathan Rou, who was also suspended by the club and subsequently moved to Italian side Bologna.

Marseille decided to suspend Rabiot and Rou and put them on the transfer list due to “unacceptable behavior,” according to the club, after the fight that occurred following a 0-1 loss to Rennes in the first round of the French league.

Several media outlets in recent hours, including Sport Italia, Sky Sport Italia, and the French newspaper L’Équipe, reported that the 30-year-old will sign a four-year contract with Milan on Monday for 10 million euros, including performance-related bonuses.

Sky Sport Italia reported that Milan’s medical team will travel to France to conduct the routine medical examination on Monday before signing, as Rabiot is currently with the French national team camp after coach Didier Deschamps included him in the squad facing Ukraine and Iceland on Friday and Tuesday respectively in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

In his Monday press conference, Deschamps confirmed Rabiot’s transfer to Milan, saying the former Paris Saint-Germain player “will only join us in the evening (Monday) because he is undergoing a medical examination that will take some time in the afternoon to allow him to sign with Milan.”

Rabiot joined Marseille in September 2024 after deciding not to continue with Juventus upon the expiration of his contract with the “Old Lady.”

Rabiot made significant financial sacrifices to join Marseille, reportedly earning 7 million euros annually according to Italian press.

He defended Juventus colors for five seasons, winning the domestic league title in 2020, as well as the Italian Cup in 2021 and 2024.

Rabiot moved to Juventus from Paris Saint-Germain, and despite reports of interest from Real Madrid and Milan, he preferred to return to Ligue 1 to be a key figure in Marseille’s project under new Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Last season, he played 31 matches for the Mediterranean club, scoring 10 goals, including 9 in the league where Marseille finished second behind Paris Saint-Germain, thus qualifying for the Champions League this season.

If he returns to Italy to play for Milan, who missed out on continental competitions this season, Rabiot will reunite with Allegri, who also returned to lead Milan this summer after three seasons at Juventus where he worked with the French midfielder between 2019 and 2024.
