Colombian President Gustavo Petro proposed on Thursday that Qatar act as a “mediator” to have the United States end its military presence in international waters off the coast of Venezuela, where small boats allegedly carrying drugs were attacked.
Petro made the remarks during his visit to Brussels, a day after he announced, without providing evidence, that Colombians might have been aboard the last boat destroyed by the US military in the Caribbean Sea.
The Trump administration announced it had sunk four small boats it claimed were carrying drugs.
Petro pointed out that Qatar has proven its role in mediating tense situations, so it is likely to succeed in persuading the US to “stop its missile attacks” in the Caribbean Sea.
The Qatari government did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the proposal.
