British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that peace “must be built with Ukraine, not imposed on it,” amid concerns about excluding Kyiv from the upcoming talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. The US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are scheduled to meet this week in Alaska to discuss the future of the Russian invasion, according to the British news agency PA Media. In a phone call on Monday with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Starmer and Carney agreed that Ukraine’s future “must be a future of freedom, sovereignty, and self-determination.” This comes after Trump hinted that Ukraine might have to give up territory to end the conflict. A spokesperson for Starmer said: “The Prime Minister spoke this afternoon with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. They discussed their steadfast support for Ukraine and ongoing efforts to stop the killing and end the Russian aggression war.
The two leaders confirmed that Ukraine’s future must be one of freedom, sovereignty, and self-determination. They welcomed ongoing international efforts led by President Trump to achieve peace and agreed that this peace must be built with Ukraine, not imposed on it. The two leaders also agreed to continue working closely with President Trump and President Zelensky in the coming days and to stay in contact.” Earlier on Monday, Starmer’s office expressed support for Trump’s initiatives regarding the war but warned that Putin “cannot be trusted at all.”
