A senior Hamas official rejected US President Donald Trump’s proposal to form a transitional peace council to oversee Gaza’s administration after the war, chaired by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, following the Sharm El-Sheikh agreement where the Palestinian movement and Israel reached a preliminary ceasefire formula in the Strip.

According to The Telegraph, Osama Hamdan, a Hamas official who participated in previous negotiations between the movement and the US, said no Palestinian faction would accept such a plan and stated: “All factions, including the Palestinian Authority, reject this.”

Israel and Hamas agreed on a ceasefire in Gaza allowing the release of remaining hostages inside the Strip in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. However, Trump’s 20-point peace plan, revealed on September 29, also called for Gaza to be governed after the war by a transitional authority chaired by him alongside Sir Tony Blair.

The US president did not address Hamas spokesman’s concerns during the cabinet meeting on Thursday; instead, he said disarmament would be part of the second phase of the Gaza agreement, with Israel insisting on Hamas relinquishing its weapons.

Trump said there would be disarmament, adding that Israeli forces would also carry out withdrawals. When asked about the two-state solution, Trump showed no commitment, saying he would abide by whatever is ultimately agreed upon. He said: “I have no opinion. I will abide by whatever they agree on.”

When asked Thursday evening about the possibility of a Palestinian state, Trump indicated it would be considered in due course and said during a bilateral meeting with Alexander Stubb, Finland’s Prime Minister: “We will see how things go. There might be a point where we do something a little different, which could be very positive for everyone.” He added: “We will look at that in due time. I think we will get there.”

Regarding what Palestinians can expect, he added: “We will create a place where people can live… we will provide better conditions for them.”
