Anthony Gordon, Newcastle United forward, apologized to his teammates and fans after being sent off during injury time of the first half for a reckless challenge on Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk in the English Premier League match at St James’ Park. Initially shown a yellow card, referee Simon Hooper upgraded it to a red. Despite playing with ten men, Newcastle managed to equalize 2-2 before Liverpool’s 16-year-old winger, Rio Ngumouha, scored the winning goal in the 100th minute. Gordon expressed on social media that his intentions were pure and he only wanted to bring energy to the game but mistimed his tackle. He also apologized directly to Van Dijk, with whom he spoke after the match. Newcastle will face Leeds United next Saturday.
