Dr. Khaled Mubarak, Governor of South Sinai, stated that the Green Hydrogen project enjoys the attention and support of the Egyptian state, as it combines 17 subsidiary components and takes advantage of the unique locations in South Sinai, especially the city of Al-Tur. This enhances the securing of Egypt’s national energy by supplying the national grid with green energy around the clock and throughout the year.
This was announced during the consultative session held today in Sharm El-Sheikh to study the environmental and social impact assessment of the Green Hydrogen Energy project, attended by the Governor of South Sinai, Frans Fam, Chairman of the Board of the implementing company, Amjad Mohamed Al-Huwaini, Head of the Studies and Research Sector, and Karim Amara, the project consultant.
The governor explained that the project has significant economic benefits, most notably providing thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities during the construction, operation, and maintenance phases. It also promotes the development of local industries through the establishment of an industrial zone around Tur Sinai, with the possibility of enhancing energy supply to the industrial zone in the cities of Abu Redis and Abu Zenima via a 500 kV electrical transmission line starting from Al-Tur to the Ain Musa area, achieving connection with the transmission line in the eastern direction of the governorate.
He added: “The expected developmental and service returns include improving infrastructure and introducing sustainable energy to local communities. The project has important social benefits, including reducing migration, localizing job opportunities within South Sinai, and providing thousands of job opportunities for youth of both genders. This contributes to integrating the people of South Sinai into this massive project, which strengthens the local economy of the Sinai community, raises the level of national awareness and belonging, supports Egyptian national security, and achieves more sustainable development, which is the goal of the Egyptian nation and the executive apparatus in South Sinai.”
The governor pointed out that the project also enhances local water security in South Sinai through advanced green water desalination plants, with the possibility of establishing an industrial complex for green energy and a specialized expertise and training center in the field. It offers the opportunity to train cadres from the Bedouin citizens of South Sinai to integrate and participate in all the project’s activities and its derived components at all stages.
He confirmed that the project will open wide horizons in activating the economy and industry, providing and enabling job opportunities for local partners. He referred to a plan to establish a giant national project that includes a new residential area accommodating about 10,000 people, with integrated services including a hospital, training center, recreational and sports areas, and other complementary services, totaling 4,000 housing units. Implementation will be carried out in three phases, with the first phase including 2,000 units to serve and support the project, in addition to 500 units designated for the Bedouins.
He added that the project deserves the addition of new agricultural areas as it provides large quantities of surplus irrigation water after filling the project’s water tanks, in addition to providing long-term and diverse job opportunities in all service and complementary fields integrated with the main activities.
