Bangkok, August 9 – The Thai army announced today that three of its soldiers were injured by a landmine explosion near the disputed border with Cambodia, in an incident threatening the fragile ceasefire agreement between the two countries. The Thai army spokesman Wintai Sovari stated that the explosion occurred while soldiers were patrolling the Si Sa Ket border province, resulting in one soldier suffering serious leg injuries and two others minor injuries. The Thai army accused Cambodian forces of “secret use of weapons,” considering the incident a “serious obstacle” to peace efforts. Meanwhile, the Thai Foreign Ministry announced its intention to file an official protest to Cambodia for violating the Ottawa Treaty banning anti-personnel mines. This incident comes just days after the two countries signed a 13-point peace document in Malaysia last Thursday, following armed clashes last month that resulted in dozens of deaths and the displacement of more than 260,000 civilians.
