Two new features are being rolled out to Google Messages users, but this also comes with a new issue, as reported by Android Authority. The app now supports PDF files. While RCS has largely solved the problems faced by traditional SMS protocols by making messaging richer and more interactive, it did not allow users to send PDF files, requiring the use of email or other messaging apps to send PDFs, adding an extra step.
According to Phone Arena, this hindered communications involving flight tickets, travel cards, and PDF documents, but this has now changed. Google has enabled PDF file sending support for RBM users, currently only available in India, with a file size limit of 100 MB.
A preview image based on the first page of the file is displayed when sending a PDF. Tapping it opens the file in a PDF viewer. For password-protected files or other cases where previews are unavailable, a default icon or thumbnail is shown instead.
Google is also working on fixing a clipping issue affecting rich card displays, a second feature that allows companies to integrate media, text, and buttons into a single message. Previously, text or suggestions on rich card displays were sometimes clipped in full-screen view. To indicate more content availability, a “More” button is now shown on clipped cards. It is not necessary to tap the button to view the message; tapping anywhere on the text expands it to a scrollable full-screen view. This ensures users do not miss important details.
This feature is currently in beta and is expected to launch publicly by the end of Q3. These two features will improve user experience by eliminating the need to use another app to receive PDFs from companies and preventing missing important parts of messages.
While Google is improving the messaging experience, a bug appeared in the app. The latest beta version, released yesterday, seems to have a bug. Pixel phone users complained that it crashes within seconds of opening, occurring only when opening the home page or message list, making notifications and chat windows the only way to continue conversations.
Some users resolved the issue by going to app info and uninstalling updates from the three-dot menu, but the only reliable fix is reinstalling the update, which does not delete message history.
