US President Donald Trump announced on Monday his peace plan for the Gaza Strip.

The plan published by the White House calls for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages held in Gaza within 72 hours after Israel publicly agrees to the deal, followed by Israel releasing Palestinian prisoners sentenced to death.

It also stipulates that Gaza be disarmed and governed by a transitional committee composed of Palestinian technocrats and international experts under the supervision of a management board chaired by Donald Trump, with no role whatsoever for Hamas.

Trump thanked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a joint press conference at the White House after a long meeting, for his “approval” of the plan, and expressed hope that Hamas would also approve it.

Hamas received the text of the plan from Qatari and Egyptian mediators, according to an official who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity.

The source said that Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and Egyptian General Intelligence Director Mahmoud Rashad “just met with Hamas negotiators and handed them the 20-point plan, and Hamas negotiators said they will study the plan in good faith and respond to it.”

A Hamas leader told AFP that the movement would study the plan once received.

Trump confirmed he will chair the “Peace Management Board” overseeing the transitional phase in Gaza, which will include former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who quickly welcomed the US president’s “bold and smart plan.”

During this phase, the affairs of the Palestinian sector will be managed by a “non-political, technocratic” Palestinian committee.

According to other provisions in the plan, the US will work with “Arab and international partners to form an international force to establish stability, to be deployed immediately in Gaza.”

Trump emphasized the important role of Arab kings and leaders in implementing the plan, thanking them, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, and others.

Netanyahu stated: “Hamas will be disarmed, Gaza will be weapon-free, Israel will retain security responsibility including a security zone in the foreseeable future. Gaza will have a peaceful civilian administration not run by Hamas or the Palestinian Authority.” He added: “If Hamas rejects your plan, Mr. President, or pretends to accept it but does everything to oppose it, Israel will finish the task itself. It can be done easily or with difficulty, but it will be done.”

The plan includes amnesty for Hamas members “who pledge peaceful coexistence and surrender their weapons,” with “a safe passage provided for Hamas members wishing to leave Gaza to countries willing to receive them.”

French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Trump’s “commitment” to “end the war” in Gaza and free the hostages.

Trump wrote on his social network “Truth Social” on Sunday: “We have a real chance to achieve something great in the Middle East.”

During his press conference, Trump reiterated his firm support for Israel, while Netanyahu told him he “supports his plan that achieves Israel’s goals.”

Netanyahu faces significant pressure domestically and internationally to end the war.
