The Sharjah Book Authority has renewed its commitment to spreading Arab culture globally by announcing the opening of submissions for the eighth cycle of the Sharjah Translation Award “Tarjuman,” one of the most prominent international awards dedicated to enhancing the presence of Arabic literature on the global cultural scene. Valued at 1.4 million dirhams, the award aims to honor the best foreign translation of an original Arabic creative work and support foreign publishers in transferring masterpieces of Arab thought and creativity into world languages, making translation a bridge for human and civilizational communication. Winners will be announced during the opening ceremony of the 44th Sharjah International Book Fair in November.
The award requires that the foreign translation be the first of the Arabic work in its first edition, with submission of printed copies, proof of publishing and translation rights, and a summary not exceeding 500 words introducing the author, the work, and its cultural significance. The award honors all partners in the translation process: the translator receives 100,000 dirhams, the Arab publishing house receives 30% of the remaining amount, and 70% goes to the foreign publishing house.
