US President Donald Trump announced his intention to hold a phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin soon, stating that the conversation will help him determine Washington’s next steps regarding the Ukraine issue.
Trump said during a press conference at the White House following his meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki: “I will speak with him very soon, and then it will become clear to me what we will do… I will have a conversation with him in the next few days.”
The US president indicated that the upcoming conversation with Putin will give him greater clarity on the next steps regarding the Ukrainian settlement process, while emphasizing that his relationship with the Russian president is “excellent.”
In response to a journalist’s question about whether he wanted to send a message to Putin, Trump said: “I have no message for President Putin, he knows my position and will make his decision one way or another, and whatever the decision, we will either be satisfied or not, and if we are not satisfied, you will see things happen.”
Trump did not rule out taking what he called “second and third phases” of measures against Russia if talks on Ukraine make no progress.
It is worth noting that President Putin had earlier confirmed that Moscow has never rejected peace with Ukraine, and the Russian president repeatedly stressed the need to establish lasting peace without any time constraints in Ukraine, noting that the conditions Moscow set in the summer of 2024 regarding the Ukrainian issue remain in effect and have not changed.
