On Sunday, before heading to Israel where he will deliver a speech at the Knesset and to Egypt where he will participate in the “Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit,” U.S. President Donald Trump said his trip to the Middle East would be “very special.”
Speaking to journalists at Andrews Air Force Base before boarding the presidential plane, Trump said the trip would be “very special,” adding, “Everyone is very excited about this moment.”
Trump added, “Israel and the Arab and Islamic countries are awaiting the moment of peace in Gaza… Everyone is happy because the prisoners will return and the war is over.”
The U.S. president stated that “the release of the prisoners might happen a little earlier.”
Sources within Hamas told the German news agency DPA on Sunday that the movement plans to hand over living prisoners to staff from the International Committee of the Red Cross at three different locations inside the Gaza Strip. The sources added that “the handover operation is scheduled for Monday morning,” although Israeli media reports indicate it might happen sooner.
Meanwhile, the “Prisoners Media Office” affiliated with Hamas said on Sunday that there are “complex obstacles” preventing the official announcement of the final lists of prisoners to be released in the exchange deal with Israel as part of the Gaza ceasefire agreement.
Hamas insists that the list of detainees to be released by Israel includes seven prominent Palestinian leaders, according to French news agency AFP citing sources familiar with the negotiations.
One of these sources said, “Hamas insists that the final list includes the seven major leaders, most notably Marwan Barghouti, Ahmed Saadat, Ibrahim Hamid, and Abbas Al-Sayed,” which was confirmed by another source to the same agency.
