US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he has not discussed specific security guarantees for Ukraine but confirmed that the United States will support it. Potential security guarantees for Ukraine represent a major obstacle to ending the Russian war in Ukraine. Trump added that during his meeting on August 15 with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, they discussed reducing the massive nuclear arsenals of their countries once the Ukrainian crisis is resolved. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, “We want nuclear disarmament… It is an excessive power, we talked about that too. This is part of the matter, but we have to end the war.” When asked why Putin hesitates to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump replied, “Because he doesn’t like him.”
