The delay in rainfall these days has caused great concern among many farmers about the possibility that this situation will affect this year’s agricultural season, similar to previous seasons.
Fears have begun to creep into the hearts of farmers due to this delay in rainfall, which signals a difficult agricultural season that deepens the suffering of farmers and livestock breeders.
The current climatic conditions, characterized by rising temperatures, have contributed to reinforcing farmers’ fears about the possible impact on autumn crops specifically, as well as the vegetation cover that benefits livestock breeders.
In this regard, Fatimi Boukerzia, President of the Moroccan Association for Agricultural Development, stated that everyone eagerly awaits the rainfall as it brings hope to the farmers’ morale.
Fatimi pointed out in his statement to Hespress electronic newspaper that rainfall during this period makes the annual production indicators positive; however, its delay may deepen the farmers’ suffering.
The professional actor noted that the delay in rainfall during this period makes the farmer more affected, especially with the damage to the vegetation cover and the absence of barley support for livestock breeders.
Fatimi Boukerzia expressed his hopes, and those of all farmers, for rainfall in the coming period to provide vegetation cover on one hand and to revive autumn crops on the other.
For his part, Othman Akal, a member of the Agricultural Chamber of the Casablanca-Settat region, confirmed that the absence of rain has become a structural problem that farmers have suffered from for seven years.
Akal noted in his statement to Hespress electronic newspaper that the delay in rainfall this season may not significantly affect other autumn crops; however, livestock breeders are the most affected.
The member of the Agricultural Chamber of Casablanca-Settat explained that livestock breeders “are more affected by the delay in rainfall than others, considering that it affects the fodder for livestock, especially in light of the suspension of barley support they used to benefit from in previous seasons.”
He added: “Currently, we may not talk about the impact on autumn crops as much as we can talk about the impact on livestock farmers; because the absence of rainfall currently makes the fodder for livestock absent, which burdens the breeders, especially amid rising prices of feed materials.”
He stressed that what is required today from the sector officials is “to accelerate the launch of the suspended barley support; because this support plays a major role in preserving the herd and livestock wealth, thus reducing the cost of sheep, amid the scarcity and absence of rainfall. Therefore, releasing the support is necessary to avoid further harm to breeders and farmers.”
