On Tuesday, China reiterated its readiness to “fight to the end” in its trade war with the United States, after President Donald Trump announced his intention to impose an additional 100% tariff on the world’s second-largest economy.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce said, “Regarding tariff wars and trade wars, China’s position remains firm.”
He added, “If you want to fight, we will fight to the end; if you want to negotiate, our door is open.”
This comes after U.S. President Donald Trump adopted a conciliatory tone regarding renewed trade tensions between the U.S. and China, while U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Beissinger told Fox Business in an interview that Trump is on his way to meet his Chinese counterpart in South Korea, where both sides are working to ease the trade disputes that escalated late last week.
The latest tension followed China’s announcement on Thursday that it would significantly expand controls on rare earth metal exports. Trump responded on Friday by declaring he would impose an additional 100% tariff on imports from China and would impose controls on the export of all important U.S. software starting November 1.
However, Trump later said, “Everything will be fine,” adding that the United States does not want to “hurt” China.
On Sunday, China blamed the United States for the escalation but did not take further retaliatory measures.
