A recent study at the University of Connecticut revealed amazing benefits of the traditional Korean dish kimchi, noting that it not only adds a unique flavor to food but also helps reduce blood sugar, fats, and blood pressure levels, thereby lowering the risk of heart attacks and cancer.
Scientific Research Confirms Its Health Benefits
The study, conducted on about 43,000 people between 2011 and 2023 and published by the Daily Mail, found that regular consumption of kimchi led to a decrease in blood sugar levels by 1.93 mg, triglycerides by about 29 mg, along with a noticeable improvement in blood pressure.
Professor Ok Chun, a participant in the study, said: “Even a slight reduction in blood pressure by 5 mmHg is a major medical achievement, and the best part is that it was achieved through food, not medication.”
Kimchi: From Korean Kitchens to Global Tables
Kimchi is a traditional Asian dish made from fermented cabbage and radishes seasoned with spices. Although it was once exclusive to Korean cuisine, it is now added to many Western dishes such as eggs, rice, avocado, and even ice cream.
It is sold worldwide at affordable prices not exceeding two dollars per serving.
The Power of Fermentation in Kimchi
Kimchi contains probiotics, beneficial bacteria that promote gut health, aid digestion, and strengthen immunity.
Nutrition experts say a balanced gut microbiome reduces inflammation in the body, protecting against diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and colon cancer.
A previous Korean study found that consuming fermented kimchi helped prevent the growth of benign tumors in the intestines, which are early stages that may later develop into cancer.
A Simple Food That Protects Against Deadly Diseases
High blood pressure and heart diseases remain the leading causes of death worldwide, causing more than 900,000 deaths annually in the United States alone.
Doctors confirm that incorporating kimchi into the daily diet helps prevent heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and improves overall health.
A Natural Alternative to Medicines and Supplements
Doctors describe kimchi as a natural and inexpensive probiotic supplement capable of boosting immunity and preventing chronic inflammation.
American doctor Daniel Atkinson said: “The benefits of kimchi are good news for anyone looking to improve their heart health and prevent modern diseases through food, not medicine.”
