Two camps have already emerged in the artistic and legal battle on the horizon.
Artificial intelligence is beginning to invade Bollywood, leaving a deep impact on the thriving Indian film industry, as producers of a famous movie used this technology to change the film’s ending against the director’s will.
This “case” erupted a month ago after the release of a Tamil-language version of a famous feature film originally released in Hindi in 2013.
Viewers of the film “Raanjhanaa” noticed that its tragic ending, featuring the death of the hero, was replaced with a happy ending where the main character survives, all due to artificial intelligence.
However, this modification sparked criticism from the actor who was “revived” and the director.
Actor Dhanush said, “This ending drained the film of its soul,” adding, “The decision was made despite my firm refusal.” He condemned what he considered a “worrying precedent” that threatens, in his words, the “integrity and legacy” of the entire film industry.
Director Anand L. Rai told AFP, “The future is AI; it is a tool to serve our creativity, not to change the past.” He added, “The producer has no right to take part of the film and change it.”
This theory was rejected by the production company “Eros,” which reminded that Indian copyright law gives the producer the right to make modifications as if they were the author of the cinematic work.
Coincidentally, this controversy shook the Indian film industry days before the announcement of the shooting or production of its first fully AI-generated film.
The film “Chiranjeevi Hanuman – The Eternal,” scheduled for release in 2026, aims to reconstruct the life of the Hindu monkey god Hanuman using computer technology.
But the dramatic entry of AI into Bollywood filming sites is causing discontent among many in the sector, especially directors.
Director Vikramaditya Motwane commented on social media, “Here it begins,” questioning, “Who will need screenwriters or directors anymore when the work is made by AI?”
