Google announced a new update for Google Drive that allows users to edit video clips directly within the platform using the Google Vids app, without the need to download files to external software. The update offers a smoother video editing experience; when previewing a video in Drive, an “Open” button appears at the top right of the screen, enabling the file to open directly in Google Vids ready for editing. Users can trim clips, adjust frames, add texts or effects, and even insert music or quick edits. The AI-powered app is designed as a comprehensive tool to help users write, produce, edit, and share videos easily, even if the files were originally created outside the app. The feature supports multiple video formats including MP4, QuickTime, OGG, and WebM. Google stated the update is rolling out gradually and will be available to all users by the end of August 2025.

The new tools can be accessed via the “Open with Google Vids” option when playing any video inside Google Drive. This integration reflects Google’s direction toward providing users with more comprehensive tools, supporting both creative teams and regular users to complete their tasks within a familiar work environment without switching platforms.
