The Colombian national team defeated South Africa 3-1 in a match held at Talca Stadium as part of the Round of 16 in the ongoing U-20 World Cup in Chile. With this win, Colombia advances to the quarterfinals while South Africa is eliminated from the tournament.
Colombia’s goals were scored by Joel Caicedo (7′), and Nieser Villarreal, who netted twice (63′, 90+6′). South Africa’s sole goal came from Mfundo Vilakazi via a penalty kick (49′).
Joel Caicedo opened the scoring early for Colombia following a precise cross from Oscar Peria. South Africa equalized through a penalty by Mfundo Vilakazi after a retake. Nieser Villarreal restored Colombia’s lead with a brilliant right-footed shot assisted by Peria, then added a third goal in injury time (90+6′) to seal the victory, ending the match 3-1.
This result marks Colombia’s first quarterfinal appearance since hosting the tournament in 2011. Colombia will face Spain in the quarterfinals next Saturday.
