The match between Morocco and Spain in the FIFA U-20 World Cup witnessed a historic moment with the first-ever use of the green card in football history.
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) decided to trial this new card, which grants the coach the right to challenge the referee’s decision during the match, with the possibility to use video review twice per team.
In the 78th minute, Morocco’s coach Mohamed Wahbi used the green card after a penalty was awarded to Spain. The referee reviewed the decision via video and overturned the penalty, instead issuing a yellow card to the Spanish player.
The match ended with Morocco winning 2-0, topping the group with 3 points, while Brazil and Mexico drew 2-2 in the same group.
The first goal for Morocco came in the 54th minute by Yassir Zubairi following an organized attack, before Yassin Jassim added the second goal to strengthen the ‘Atlas Lions’ lead.
