On Monday, the leaders of the Israeli opposition expressed their support for US President Donald Trump’s proposal to end the war in the Gaza Strip.
Benny Gantz, a member of the Israeli Knesset, posted on the platform “X” that Trump’s proposal to end the nearly two-year-long war in Gaza is an opportunity to free the captives held there and protect Israel’s security.
Gantz wrote: “I commend President Trump for the tremendous efforts he is making to bring back our captives and ensure Israel’s security.” He added, “The president’s plan must be implemented to return all our captives, maintain security freedom of movement, and remove Hamas rule.”
Gantz warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against sabotaging the deal due to “narrow policies,” referring to ministers in the Israeli government who reject ending the war.
Gantz leads the opposition “Blue and White” party, which holds eight of the 120 seats in the Knesset.
Similarly, Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid also endorsed Trump’s proposal in a post on “X,” writing: “President Trump’s plan forms the right basis for reaching a deal to return the captives and end the war.”
Meanwhile, Israeli Education Minister Yoav Kish commented on “X” saying, “The agreement achieves all the war’s objectives.” On the same platform, Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar wrote: “Israel makes peace from a position of strength.” Shas party leader Aryeh Deri also said: “I fully support President Trump’s plan.”
Opposition Democratic Party leader Yair Golan sent a veiled message to government opponents of ending the war: “Ending the war, returning the captives, disarming Hamas, and dismantling Hamas government — you must hate Israel completely to reject Trump’s plan.” He added on “X”: “We will provide a full parliamentary safety net for the plan, but we will only rejoice and celebrate when all captives return home.”
Similarly, Israel’s Channel 12 quoted former Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot, leader of the Yesh Atid party, saying: “We must immediately implement difficult decisions to bring back the captives immediately.” He addressed Netanyahu: “Mr. Prime Minister, you must ignore the political threats from extremists in your government. The people support the return of the captives, and there is a clear majority in the Knesset that supports this.”
The Israeli Prisoners’ Families Association said in a statement: “We hope to breathe a sigh of relief in light of the historic announcement by President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu approving the agreement to return all 48 captives and end the war by Israel.” It added: “The test now is the immediate implementation of the agreement.”
It continued: “With Trump’s plan adopted by all parties, the Prime Minister must immediately order a halt to military operations in Gaza City, which still endangers the captives, soldiers, and the implementation of the historic agreement.”
Earlier on Monday, the US president announced his peace plan for Gaza, which Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said he supports, while reserving the right to “complete the mission” if Hamas rejects it.
The plan published by the White House calls for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all prisoners held in Gaza within 72 hours of Israel’s public approval of the agreement, followed by Israel releasing Palestinian prisoners it holds who are sentenced to death.
It also stipulates that Gaza be demilitarized and governed by a transitional committee composed of Palestinian technocrats and international experts under a board chaired by Donald Trump, with no role whatsoever for Hamas.
Hamas received the plan text from Qatari and Egyptian mediators and has begun studying it “in good faith,” according to several sources.
