The World Council of Churches (WCC) is the largest international ecumenical body bringing together churches from various Christian denominations and traditions. The council was established in the mid-20th century with the aim of promoting dialogue and unity among churches, and joint work on spiritual, humanitarian, and social issues worldwide.
Today, the council includes more than 300 churches and denominations from over one hundred countries. Eastern churches constitute about 15% of its membership, while Western churches represent nearly 85%.
The Coptic Orthodox Church officially joined the World Council of Churches in 1954, becoming one of the prominent Eastern churches in the council. Since then, the church has played an active role in theological dialogues and participates in various committees and programs, alongside its membership in regional and local church councils.
The Coptic Church’s participation in the council reflects its historical and spiritual role on the global Christian stage, especially as it has churches and monasteries in more than 60 countries and maintains relationships of communication and love with churches in the East and West.
Through its representatives, the Coptic Church contributes to presenting the Eastern Orthodox perspective within ecumenical forums and participates in theological dialogues aimed at clarifying Orthodox faith and bridging viewpoints among different churches.
The cooperation between the Coptic Church and the World Council of Churches focuses on:
- Enhancing unity of faith and dialogue among denominations.
- Exchanging theological and spiritual experiences.
- Supporting joint church work in education and service.
- Engaging with societal issues and contemporary challenges.
