Irish author Sally Rooney has pledged to donate the proceeds from two series adapted by the BBC from her books to the Palestine Action movement, which was banned in the United Kingdom after being classified as a terrorist organization. Rooney, known for her novel ‘Normal People’ and its 2020 BBC adaptation, announced her decision in the Irish Times, choosing it over a British newspaper due to the legal restrictions following the ban in early July. She stated that she intends to use these proceeds and her fame to continue supporting Palestine Action and direct action against genocide by all possible means. Since the ban, over 700 people, mostly during pro-organization protests, have been arrested. Joining or supporting Palestine Action is now a criminal offense punishable by up to 14 years in prison in the UK.
British Home Secretary Yvette Cooper defended the ban, emphasizing national security and public safety, describing the organization as not non-violent.
