Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology intervened to cancel a penalty awarded to Al Ahly against Zamalek in Derby 131 of the league today, Monday, during the ninth round of the competition.
In the 45th minute, Spanish referee Cesar Soto Grado awarded a penalty for an alleged handball by Moroccan player Mahmoud Bentayg following a shot by Al Ahly’s Taher Mohamed Taher.
However, after a VAR review, the Spanish referee overturned the penalty after it was confirmed that the ball had hit Mahmoud Bentayg’s chest.
Zamalek took the lead with a goal by defender Hossam Abdel Meguid in the 32nd minute from a retaken penalty after Al Ahly players entered the penalty area during the first penalty attempt, which was missed by Abdullah Al-Saeed and saved by Mohamed El-Shenawy in the 29th minute.
