The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced on Tuesday the entry of 8 trucks loaded with vital medical supplies into the Gaza Strip.
This shipment is part of urgent international efforts to support the collapsed health sector in Gaza, coinciding with the implementation of the ceasefire agreement that ended the war.
In his statements, Dr. Tedros emphasized that despite the importance of this aid, it remains just a drop in the ocean of the sector’s immense needs.
The WHO chief said, “The health system in Gaza must be rehabilitated and rebuilt,” referring to the extensive destruction inflicted on hospitals, medical centers, and health infrastructure over two years of aggression, which led to their near-total collapse.
In a high-level diplomatic move aimed at consolidating peace in the Middle East, the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh hosted the “Peace Summit” on Monday, gathering leaders from around the world, co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and former U.S. President Donald Trump.
The summit was primarily convened to rally international support and endorse the “Sharm El-Sheikh Agreement to End the War in Gaza,” reached days earlier through Egyptian, American, Qatari, and Turkish mediation.
Discussions focused on mechanisms to ensure the implementation of the agreement’s provisions, including a comprehensive ceasefire, prisoner and hostage exchanges, Israeli withdrawal, and the flow of humanitarian aid into the Strip.
During the summit, participants praised the pivotal role played by the mediating countries, especially President Trump’s leadership in the settlement efforts and Egypt’s role in coordinating humanitarian work and hosting the summit, stressing the need to move to the next phases of the settlement plan, which includes reconstruction and exploring the political path for the Palestinian issue.
