Lebanese President Joseph Aoun condemned the airstrikes that targeted “civilian facilities” early Saturday, which according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health resulted in one death. Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation army said it bombed infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah.

Despite a ceasefire being in effect for months, Israel continues to carry out airstrikes it says target Hezbollah members and military infrastructure, especially in the south of the country.

Aoun said in a statement, “Once again, southern Lebanon falls under the blatant Israeli aggression against civilian facilities. Without justification or even pretext.”

Aoun considered that “the seriousness of the recent aggression is that it comes after the ceasefire agreement in Gaza,” where the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect Friday afternoon, amid fears in Lebanon of intensified Israeli strikes against Hezbollah, which still refuses to hand over its weapons to the state.

He added in his statement that this timing “poses fundamental challenges to us as Lebanese and to the international community, including the question of whether anyone is thinking of compensating for Gaza in Lebanon, to ensure the continuation of political profiteering through fire and killing.”

The airstrikes, numbering ten according to the official National News Agency, targeted “6 excavator and bulldozer yards on the Al-Musaylih road, leading to the destruction and burning of a large number of machinery,” while the Lebanese Ministry of Health said the strikes resulted in the death of one Syrian national and injuries to seven people, one Syrian and six Lebanese including two women.

Al-Musaylih, which includes the residence of the Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri in southern Lebanon, is near the coastal city of Sidon, the largest city in southern Lebanon, and is more than 40 kilometers from the Israeli border.

Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation army said in a statement that it attacked “infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah used to store engineering equipment intended to rebuild terrorist infrastructure in southern Lebanon.”

It added that “Hezbollah continues its attempts to restore terrorist infrastructure across Lebanon, endangering Lebanese citizens and using them as human shields.”
