With the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip officially coming into effect today, Friday, European countries commented.
“Everyone must comply”
A statement issued by the leaders of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom on Friday, following developments in the Middle East, welcomed the ceasefire agreement in the region, the planned release of hostages, and the resumption of humanitarian aid to the civilian population in Gaza.
The three leaders also praised the leadership of US President Donald Trump and the efforts of Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey to resolve the crisis.
They emphasized their commitment to supporting humanitarian aid packages through UN agencies to ensure their delivery, highlighting the importance of all parties fully and promptly fulfilling their obligations.
Regarding Iran, the leaders agreed that activating the snapback mechanism to reimpose sanctions was a correct decision, explaining that they are determined to restart negotiations with Iran and the US to reach a comprehensive, durable, and enforceable agreement that guarantees Iran will never acquire nuclear weapons.
This comes amid intensified high-level meetings more than a week before the United Nations General Assembly, especially between French President Emmanuel Macron and his Iranian counterpart, in an effort to reach a settlement on sanctions and conclude a new agreement, but to no avail.
“Snapback Mechanism”
The European Troika countries that launched the “snapback mechanism” path demanded last August that Tehran grant the International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors full access to all nuclear facilities.
They conditioned the resumption of negotiations with Washington, as well as the adoption of a mechanism to ensure the security of the enriched uranium stockpile.
Meanwhile, Iran considered these conditions unfair and a form of pressure, affirming that its nuclear program is peaceful.
