Meta has begun testing one of the most significant updates to WhatsApp in years, allowing users to communicate via unique usernames instead of exchanging phone numbers.

The feature appeared in the beta version 2.25.24.22 on Android, marking a major shift in how users discover and connect with each other.

How Does WhatsApp’s New Feature Work?

According to press reports, each user will be able to create a unique identifier name following specific length and format rules. Searching for others will be available directly from the “Chats” tab, displaying the matching account with the username and profile picture if allowed by settings, without needing a phone number.

Greater Privacy on WhatsApp

The main use of this new feature is to completely hide the personal phone number from the other party, showing only the username and picture, providing additional security especially in large groups or chats with strangers.

Reports noted that chats via usernames will function like regular chats, supporting texts, images, voice notes, and documents. WhatsApp confirmed that end-to-end encryption will remain fully effective without any changes.

Combating Spam Messages

WhatsApp will integrate automated systems to detect suspicious behaviors, such as sending repeated messages to different usernames, with strict enforcement of terms of service to suspend abusive accounts.

Also, knowing the username alone will not be enough to communicate, as the app added an option for a special key used as a gateway to initiate the first messages, preventing spam and giving users greater control over incoming messages.

This feature also opens the door to a safer environment, especially for business owners and creators who want to communicate without revealing their numbers, reducing fraud and unwanted calls globally.

WhatsApp Username: An Optional Feature

The feature will not be mandatory; users can continue relying on phone numbers or switch to the username system whenever they want, allowing flexibility in adoption.

After the testing period ends, Meta will gradually roll out the feature to all WhatsApp users worldwide in the coming months, marking a new chapter in the app’s journey toward greater privacy and flexibility.
