Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, announced on Monday that the war in Gaza is becoming more dangerous day by day, emphasizing that war is not the solution. She added on the X platform: “If a military solution were possible, the war would have already ended.” She confirmed that the EU’s priorities remain humanitarian support, including enabling NGOs to access Gaza, an immediate ceasefire, and the release of the remaining hostages. Meanwhile, Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir assessed the army’s readiness, stating, “According to the cabinet decision, we are on the brink of a new phase of fighting in Gaza.” Zamir added that they will develop the best approach in line with defined goals, maintaining professionalism and principles, considering the readiness of forces and combat means, and keeping the hostages in mind.
He concluded that all alternatives presented to the cabinet aim to defeat Hamas, understanding the implications on all aspects. The Israeli army will know how to control Gaza City just as it controlled Khan Yunis and Rafah. Earlier on Monday, a delegation from Hamas headed to Cairo to continue communications with the Egyptian side to resume indirect negotiations with Israel regarding the situation in Gaza, according to Ma’an agency. The delegation, led by Khalil al-Hayya, a Hamas leader, arrived in Cairo to communicate with Egyptian mediators seeking to assist in continuing negotiations with Israel. Cairo expressed readiness to make new efforts to reconcile positions following regional and international pressure to stop Israeli bombing and facilitate humanitarian aid entry to Gaza. It is noted that on July 27, Hamas announced the futility of negotiations with Israel amid the ongoing blockade of the Gaza Strip.
Prior to that, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the recall of the Tel Aviv delegation from Doha, where several rounds of negotiations had been held since June 6 to resolve the conflict. The United States also decided to recall negotiators from Doha after Hamas’s latest response to the amended US proposal for a ceasefire and prisoner exchange.
