Actress Caroline Azmy appeared as a guest on the program “Sahibet Al-Saada” hosted by artist and media personality Esad Younis on DMC channel, where she revealed some personal and professional aspects of her life and her beginnings in acting.
The young actress Caroline Azmy disclosed the difficult journey she faced to achieve her acting dream, confirming that she had to work two jobs to cover training expenses and submitted her application to the Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts without her father’s knowledge.
Caroline said, “I grew up in a very close middle-class family, we are five siblings, and my family is far from the acting field. We had no one in this field, but since I was a child, I used to stand in front of the mirror and imitate characters. I loved the actress Nadia El Gendy very much and preferred to imitate her, especially in her popular roles, which surprised my family for a little girl. They saw me on the school stage, but they never imagined I would become an actress.”
She revealed her father’s different wishes for her future, saying: “My father wanted me to join the Faculty of Law because I was a bit mischievous as a child.”
About the bold step she took, she said: “When I turned 17, I searched online for an acting institute and found the Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts. I went and submitted my papers without my father’s knowledge; only my mother knew.”
Caroline explained the financial challenges she faced to achieve her dream: “I needed money for training workshops to prepare for the admission exam. I worked in a nursery from 8 am to 2 pm for 650 Egyptian pounds, and in a beauty clinic from 3 pm to 8 pm for 850 pounds. I was saving money for training.”
About the moment she was accepted into the institute, she said: “When I succeeded, it was a bittersweet joy. I was very happy to be accepted among only 20 people out of 3,000 applicants, but at the same time, I didn’t know how to tell my father.”
Caroline described the success of the series “Haq Arab” as shocking and surprising to her, saying: “It was the first time I felt what street success means.” She added, “It was the first time I saw people running after me and knocking on the glass; I was shocked,” explaining that this success was different from her experience in the series “Abu Al-Arousa,” where the audience interaction was limited compared to the buzz caused by “Haq Arab.”
Regarding the series “Fahd Al-Batal,” Caroline confirmed that she agreed to the role as soon as she read the first episode, finding it a great challenge and an opportunity to break out of the delicate girl roles offered to her after “Haq Arab.” She said, “As soon as I read the first episode, I called them and said I will sign… the role of a popular girl; she and Fahd are going out and showing their toughness together.”
She also talked about the filming behind the scenes in the Al-Abaghiya area, where the crew’s caravans were in the middle of cemeteries, which caused her continuous fear, especially as filming continued until the early dawn hours. She recounted a terrifying incident when the crew informed her of a murder near her caravan, saying: “Someone was just killed next to you, exactly next to your caravan… I didn’t sleep a second during the entire location.”
In a humorous note, Azmy revealed that her success in brilliantly portraying the popular character led to receiving real marriage proposals from fans of the series, commenting: “I don’t know why, even though I was mostly dirty and wearing an abaya.”
Caroline Azmy said she was driven by a strong desire to achieve her acting dream, saying: “I felt I wanted to achieve my dream, and no one believed in me except myself.” She explained that she used to visit all casting offices herself until she learned about auditions for the series “The Godfather,” which was looking for new faces.
About that day, she said: “I went there and found 300 people, it was crowded… and I went after the institute dirty and with my hair tied.” Although she did not expect to be accepted, she received a call three months later informing her that she was chosen for the lead role, revealing that actor Mahmoud Hemida recommended her for the role.
As for the series “Abu Al-Arousa,” its story was stranger. After a full year of stopping work following “The Godfather,” she was offered a small role of only six scenes in the series. During her meeting with the crew, she arrived wearing full makeup and high heels, but producer Ibrahim Hamouda surprised her with a strange request, saying: “Go wash your face.”
She added: “I went in and washed my face, he told me you are Hagar… you will sign the lead role of the series.” She explained that the actress who was nominated for the main role of “Hagar” had declined, so the role was assigned to her by pure coincidence after the producer saw her naturally, and she began filming her scenes just two days after signing the contract.
The young actress Caroline Azmy talked about the challenges she faced at the beginning of her artistic path, foremost among them her father’s outright rejection of her entering the Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts, and how this rejection gradually turned into support and encouragement.
Azmy described the moment she was accepted into the institute, where only 20 students were selected out of 3,000 applicants, as a “bittersweet joy,” explaining: “The problem didn’t stop there; the problem was how I was going to tell my father? I didn’t know whether to be happy or sad.”
She added that she decided to confront her father, which was the “decisive moment,” where her decision was met with strong rejection. She said: “Of course, he made a very big problem and told me he would go tomorrow to withdraw my file.” She mentioned that her father saw her as “deluded” and that this field had no future, especially since they had no connections in the artistic community.
Caroline confirmed that she insisted on taking the risk and made an agreement with him to give her only one year. She started working in plays and invited him to watch them, saying: “Little by little, I started doing plays and inviting him… bit by bit, he began to believe in me.”
She concluded her story with a tone of victory and pride, pointing to the complete change in her father’s attitude by saying: “Now he is the one who encourages me,” which was praised by artist Esad Younis, who commented: “Bravo, my dear, your persistence paid off.”
In a conversation mixing comedy and seriousness, the young actress Caroline Azmy revealed another side of her personality away from art, confirming that she possesses great skills as a “housewife” and is capable of handling household responsibilities competently.
During her talk with Esad Younis on “Sahibet Al-Saada” on DMC channel, after discussing the marriage proposals she received, Younis asked about her ability to manage a home, to which Caroline confidently replied: “Shame on you… I pamper the groom and dazzle him in the kitchen,” noting that she excels particularly in preparing Egyptian food and likes to add her special touches to dishes.
Caroline explained that the secret of her learning cooking and household tasks goes back to her upbringing in a family of five children, two girls and three boys. She said: “My father and mother used to work, so my sister and I divided the tasks. One day I cleaned and she cooked, and the next day vice versa.” She added that having three brothers was a motivation for her to bear responsibility from a young age, as the two girls had to do the household chores while the boys handled shopping.
