Government representatives from Tehran, Berlin, London, and Paris are scheduled to meet in Geneva, Switzerland, on Tuesday to discuss the contentious Iranian nuclear program. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi leads the Iranian delegation in the Geneva negotiations. Just over a month ago, representatives from the three European countries, collectively known as the “E3,” met with Iran in Istanbul to address the nuclear dispute. The meeting aims to increase political pressure on the Islamic Republic to push the Iranian leadership towards a diplomatic agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program. Today’s meeting marks the first round of talks following the 12-day war between Israel and Iran last June. The Europeans have threatened to reimpose old United Nations sanctions, known as the “snapback” mechanism, on Tehran if no resolution to the nuclear dispute is reached by the end of August.
Since the three countries are signatories to the 2015 Vienna nuclear deal, they can activate this mechanism, which stipulates the reimposition of strict punitive measures.
