A study published in the journal “Foods” showed that maintaining balanced ratios of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids can help lower triglyceride levels in the body, reduce the risk of depression, and prevent age-related diseases ranging from dementia to cancer.

The researchers pointed out that the human body cannot synthesize omega-3 and omega-6 on its own, so they must be obtained through diet or supplements. They emphasized that it’s not just about taking supplements but achieving a balance between these two types of acids; the ideal omega-6 to omega-3 ratio ranges between 4:1 and 1:1.

The study explained that the modern Western diet tends to favor omega-6, and its excess may promote inflammation in the body. The researchers also noted that some supplements, such as fish oil, may contain impurities like mercury and can sometimes oxidize during storage, reducing their effectiveness. Additionally, omega-3 intake can increase the effects of certain medications, such as anticoagulants and blood pressure reducers, so consulting a doctor before taking any supplement is necessary.

The researchers concluded that omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids have a significant impact on enhancing health, from brain functions to reducing inflammation in the body, provided they are obtained thoughtfully within a balanced diet to ensure maximum benefit.
