The German national team defeated their hosts Northern Ireland 1-0 in the match held at Windsor Park in Belfast as part of the fourth round of Group 1 in the European qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
The only goal of the match came from Germany’s Newcastle United striker Nick Woltemade in the 31st minute.
The match saw early dominance from Germany, and Northern Ireland almost turned the game around when their defender Daniel Ballard scored an early goal in the 15th minute, but it was ruled offside. Germany responded strongly, and from a corner kick taken by David Raum, Woltemade jumped and the ball hit his shoulder and went into the Northern Irish net. After consultation with the video assistant referees, the goal was confirmed (31′). Germany maintained control until the match ended with a 1-0 victory.
With this result, Germany achieved their third win and raised their points to 9 from 4 matches, leading on goal difference over Slovakia who also have 9 points after beating Luxembourg 2-0, while Northern Ireland remained third with 6 points.
The final two rounds of this group will take place next November, with Germany facing Luxembourg away, Slovakia hosting Northern Ireland in the fifth round, and in the last round Germany hosting Slovakia while Northern Ireland hosts Luxembourg. The group winner will qualify directly for the World Cup, while the runner-up will enter the playoffs.
