Alexandria Governorate has witnessed progress in the second phase of the Abu Qir Metro project, with the foundations of the first elevated station laid in the Tousson area and completion of concrete pile driving along the route from Abu Qir to Mandara, including the installation of beams over the concrete columns.
Governor Ahmed Khaled Saeed confirmed that the Abu Qir Metro represents a qualitative leap in public transport in the governorate to serve Alexandria’s citizens, noting that trial operation is expected in the first quarter of 2027.
The project extends 21.7 km from Abu Qir railway station to Misr station in Alexandria, including 6.5 km at surface level and 15.2 km elevated, with 20 stations (6 surface and 14 elevated). It aims to improve sustainable green public transport, reduce traffic congestion, and increase passenger capacity from 2,850 to 60,000 passengers per hour per direction, while cutting travel time from 50 to 25 minutes.
The line will also provide passenger transfer services with the Cairo/Alexandria railway, Tram Al-Raml, and Rashid railway lines at various stations.
The governorate prepared alternative traffic routes after demolishing the Mandara Bridge to complete the metro path and urged citizens to comply with traffic detours to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow during construction.
