A medical team from the ENT department at Sohag University Hospital successfully performed a rare and precise operation to remove a vascular tumor (Glomus Tympanicum) from the middle ear of a 47-year-old female patient from Qena Governorate, using a middle ear endoscope. This operation is the first of its kind performed with this technique in Sohag Governorate.

Providing Distinguished Medical Services

Dr. Hassan El-Naamani, the university president, stated that this achievement reflects the high scientific competence and practical skills of the doctors, confirming that they are on the right path to provide distinguished medical services worthy of the people of Upper Egypt, keeping pace with the latest global treatment methods. He expressed thanks and appreciation to all medical and nursing staff involved.

Modern Techniques

Dr. Magdy El-Kady, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board, explained that the operation was performed using middle ear endoscopy, a modern technique that allows precise visualization of the ear cavity without the need for external surgery, reducing complications and speeding up recovery. He emphasized that this achievement is an advanced step toward localizing delicate endoscopic ear surgeries in Upper Egypt.

Series of Examinations

Dr. Ahmed Kamal, Executive Director of University Hospitals, noted that the operation was conducted after a series of precise examinations, including hearing tests, CT scans, and contrast MRI. The tumor was completely removed under general anesthesia using the endoscope, while preserving the ear ossicles, facial nerve, and adjacent brain arteries, reflecting the high competence of the medical team.

A Qualitative Achievement for the Department

Similarly, Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Ghaffar, Head of the ENT Department, stated that this surgery is a qualitative achievement for the department, as it was performed through the external ear canal without any surgical incision, using the middle ear endoscope. This allowed precise handling and complete removal of the tumor while preserving the eardrum in its natural state. He confirmed the department’s ongoing commitment to performing such delicate operations to serve patients in Sohag and Upper Egypt.
