The Russian Embassy in Egypt celebrated 82 years of diplomatic relations between Egypt and Russia, stating in a Tuesday statement that the relations have always been characterized by friendliness. The statement added that based on the spirit of the comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation agreement, effective since January 2021, the two countries continue to steadily enhance their cooperation in political, commercial, economic, cultural, and other fields. The statement noted that Moscow and Cairo maintain regular contacts at the highest level. On October 22, 2024, President Vladimir Putin met with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan. In May 2025, the Egyptian president attended the Victory Parade in Moscow. On June 10, 2024, during the BRICS foreign ministers meeting in Nizhny Novgorod, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry. On September 16, 2024, Lavrov met with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdel Aaty during a working visit to Moscow.

The statement confirmed that Russia and Egypt remain committed to enhancing coordination within the United Nations and other multilateral platforms. Egypt’s accession to the BRICS group in January 2024 gave new momentum to developing cooperation. The embassy pointed out that Egypt is Russia’s largest trade and economic partner in Africa. In 2024, bilateral trade volume exceeded 9 billion USD. An important element of bilateral cooperation is the Russian-Egyptian Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation. The 15th meeting of the commission was held in May 2025, co-chaired by Russian Minister of Industry and Trade Anton Alikhanov and Egyptian Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan Al-Khatib. The cooperation also includes several large-scale joint projects, most notably the construction of the Dabaa nuclear power plant by the state company Rosatom.

Under the contract, Rosatom will not only build Egypt’s first nuclear power plant but also supply Russian nuclear fuel throughout the plant’s lifecycle and provide staff training. Construction began in July 2022. The tourism sector remains one of the most important areas of cooperation, with nearly 1.6 million Russian citizens visiting Egypt last year. The statement concluded with Russian congratulations to colleagues and friends in Egypt on this joint anniversary and reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to continuing to develop all aspects of bilateral relations.
