American envoy Tom Barrack confirmed after meeting President Joseph Aoun that what US President Donald Trump has done in the region “reflects his desire for Lebanon to be a prosperous country.” He pointed out that Israel “does not want to occupy Lebanon” and that its withdrawal will be “proportional to the steps taken to disarm Hezbollah.” Barrack said Lebanon will present on August 31 a plan to convince Hezbollah to give up its weapons, and that the Lebanese government “has identified several points and pledged to adhere to them.” He added that there is “a financing plan to compensate those who surrender their weapons from Hezbollah.” The American envoy emphasized that the Lebanese army “performed well south of the Litani River,” announcing that his country will support extending UNIFIL forces for an additional year and that “a clear plan regarding Hezbollah’s disarmament will be prepared.” He also noted that “Israel will present its withdrawal plan once it receives the Lebanese plan,” pointing to efforts to remove “Iranian and Syrian concerns from the equation.” Barrack also pointed out that Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shar’a “has no aggressive intentions towards Lebanon” and “wants to reach an agreement on border demarcation between the two countries.”
