The Australian government expelled Iranian Ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi, withdrew its ambassador from Tehran, and suspended embassy operations, accusing Iran of orchestrating two anti-Semitic attacks in Melbourne and Sydney. Australian intelligence concluded that Iran was behind deliberate fires targeting a kosher café in Sydney’s Bondi suburb in October 2024 and a synagogue in Melbourne in December 2024. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described these as serious acts of aggression by a foreign state aiming to undermine social cohesion in Australia. Australia also announced plans to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization. Australian diplomats in Iran are reported safe in an unspecified third country. Iran has not responded to the accusations.
