The Greek Orthodox and Latin Patriarchates in Jerusalem issued a joint statement on Tuesday morning confirming that monks and nuns in Gaza City have decided to remain in their churches and not to flee to the southern Gaza Strip despite the Israeli government’s decision to take control of the city and evacuate its residents. The statement noted that in recent days, media reports have repeatedly mentioned massive military mobilization and preparations for an imminent attack. It also highlighted that evacuation orders have already been issued for several neighborhoods in Gaza City amid intense bombardment and increasing destruction and death in an already tragic situation. The statement described the Israeli government’s declaration that ‘the gates of hell will be opened’ as tragically taking shape. The complexes of St.
Porphyrius Church of the Greek Orthodox and the Holy Family Church in Gaza have become shelters for hundreds of civilians, including the elderly, women, and children. The Latin Church complex has long housed people with disabilities cared for by the Missionaries of Charity. Refugees sheltered within these complexes must decide according to their conscience, many suffering from emaciation and malnutrition due to hardships in recent months. The statement warned that leaving Gaza and attempting to flee south would be tantamount to a death sentence. For this reason, priests and nuns have decided to stay and continue caring for all who remain within the two complexes. The statement emphasized the uncertainty of what will happen on the ground for their congregation and all residents, reiterating that no future can be built on imprisonment, displacement, or revenge against Palestinians.
It condemned any justification for deliberate and forced mass displacement of civilians and called for an end to the cycle of violence, the war, and prioritizing the common good. The statement urged the international community to act to end this destructive war and to facilitate the return of missing persons and Israeli hostages.
